Walk the plot and note where water pools, where it drains too fast, and where crops have struggled in past seasons. This kind of observation is free and tells you more about where a sensor should go than any product listing will.

Pick one tool rather than a full system

It is tempting to buy a sensor, an irrigation controller, and a monitoring app together. Starting with a single tool, usually a soil sensor, gives you something concrete to learn from before layering on complexity.

Keep a simple record of what you observe

A notebook or a basic spreadsheet noting sensor readings alongside what you see in the field helps you judge whether the tool is telling you something useful. Without this record, it is hard to know if a tool earned its place.

Expand only after one full season

A single growing season rarely tells the whole story, since weather varies year to year. Waiting through at least one cycle before adding automated irrigation or additional sensors tends to lead to steadier decisions.
